We rely on the support of hundreds of incredible volunteers each year to provide Toronto with a fun, informative, and unique experience. Help us help everyone sample as many delicious new products as they can stomach, discover innovative ideas, and engage with some of the brightest voices leading the vegetarian movement today. Pre- and Post-Event Opportunities:

Bookstore

BOOKSTORE MERCHANDISER
Duties: Design a visually appealing and easily navigable plan for the TVA bookstore. Be on site the afternoon of Friday, September 5th to lead the set up of the bookstore, including unpacking and shelving books and leading other volunteers. Creating informative signage for the bookstore where appropriate.
Qualifications: Must be creative, self-directed, and able to work with minimal supervision. Experience setting up retail displays or other types of displays preferred. Will be required to design a bookstore plan at least 2 weeks before the festival.
Timeline: First meeting in mid-late July. Final plan completed by mid-August.
BOOKSTORE INVENTORY ASSISTANT
Duties: Updating spreadsheet of books to be ordered, including finding ISBN numbers, and determining local distributors. Placing and tracking book orders for the TVA bookstore.
Qualifications: Must have good attention to detail and communication skills. The spreadsheet may be updated from home, but you must be able to come to the TVA office to place orders during July and August. Expected commitment: 3 hours updating spreadsheet, 6-10 hours placing orders.
Timeline: Bulk of book orders take place in July, with a few hours possible in August.

Event Services

DRIVER
Duties: Drive between Harbourfront Centre and our off-site prep kitchen, grab last minute ingredients from the grocery store to save the day!
Qualifications: Must have a valid Ontario Driver’s License of G2 Class or higher. Must provide a vehicle such as a car or minivan, OR please let us know if you are comfortable driving a moving vehicle (such as a small U-Haul truck).
LOADING CREW (Friday, September 5th)
Duties: Loading TVA display materials, books and merchandise from the TVA office into our cargo van. Unloading materials from our cargo van at Harbourfront Centre. Transporting materials to appropriate venues at Harbourfront Centre as marked on boxes and helping to set up TVA’s display tables.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and perform moderate to heavy lifting down a flight of stairs. Must travel from TVA to Harbourfront Centre once loading is done at TVA in order to complete unloading at Harbourfront Centre. TTC tokens will be provided.
LOADING CREW (Sunday, September 7th)
Duties: Loading TVA display materials, books and merchandise from tables at Harbourfront Centre into our cargo van. Unloading materials from our cargo van at the TVA office.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and perform moderate to heavy lifting up a flight of stairs. Must travel from TVA to Harbourfront Centre once loading is done at TVA in order to complete unloading at Harbourfront Centre. TTC tokens will be provided.
Mid-Event Opportunities:

Bookstore

CASHIERS
Duties: Processing payments for book sales and memberships at the TVA Bookstore. Clearly marking and recording all purchases.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions, and be friendly and outgoing. Cashier experience preferred.
SALESPERSON (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Staffing the TVA bookstore. Helping shoppers select cookbooks and books, answering people’s questions about books and directing them to the cash for payment.
Qualifications: Must have knowledge of the latest vegetarian cookbooks and authors. Must be outgoing and have excellent sales and customer service skills. Volunteers with retail sales experience preferred.
BOOKSTORE CAPTAIN (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Overseeing the TVA Bookstore for a full day or more at the Festival. Managing and mentoring other volunteers, answering questions about technical things such as processing sales, and ensuring that the shelves are well stocked. Ensuring that everyone is aware of the goals for the day and motivating other volunteers to reach those goals. Managing book signings in the Bookstore area.
Qualifications: Must have knowledge of the latest vegetarian cookbooks and authors. Must be outgoing and have excellent sales, customer service and communication skills. Must have experience volunteering at TVA outreach events.
Time Commitment Required: Bookstore managers are expected to commit to being on site at the Food Festival for at least one full day. During that day, they will be expected to spend 30 minutes once every three hours at the bookstore when they will meet with the other volunteers, check if shelves need restocking, go over the goals and answer any questions volunteers have.
Cooking Demonstrations
COOKING DEMO FOOD PREP
Duties: Helping to prepare samples for cooking demonstrations, including washing and chopping ingredients.
Qualifications: Must be able to closely follow instructions and have experience, whether personal or professional, cooking and baking. Should have a love of cooking.
Please note: This position takes place during the Food Festival weekend but takes places off site of the Harbourfront Centre. Exact location may be determined in August, but it will be relatively nearby the Harbourfront Centre.
CHEF ASSISTANT
Duties: Helping distribute samples and recipes to the audience. Taking directions from demo chefs about food prep, equipment needs, and other small tasks. Managing crowds during book signings at the end of cooking demo sessions.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and perform general cleaning tasks, including some light lifting.
PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
Duties: Cleaning the cooking demo area and demo equipment in the cooking demo venue at the Food Festival. Helping cooking demonstrators with setup, teardown, audience seating, and all other items as needed.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and perform general cleaning tasks, including some light lifting.
COOKING DEMO CAPTAIN
Duties: Assisting the Cooking Demo Manager and taking the lead in organizing/orienting chef and production assistants, and managing book signings. Being on call for duties that come up throughout the day, allowing the Cooking Demo Manager to take breaks throughout the day.
Qualifications: Experience working with cooking demos in the past, willing to commit to one full day (with breaks) in the cooking demo area.
Outreach
CHILDREN’S AREA ASSISTANT
Duties: This is an area dedicated to families and creativity. Assist families with crafts, workshops, and maintain quiet area.
Qualifications: Experience with children, outgoing, creative, work with team & public.
TVA AMBASSADOR (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Staff TVA tables where you’ll act as an ambassador, promoting the organization and provide information regarding the support we can offer vegetarians. Your primary goal is to encourage people to join TVA and become part of the community, and handle sales of membership donations, including processing payments.
Qualifications: Must be outgoing and have excellent sales and customer service skills. Great verbal communication skills, friendly disposition and be knowledgeable about vegetarianism and TVA. Must be vegetarian.
TVA AMBASSADOR BOOTH CAPTAIN (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Taking a leadership role at the TVA table for a full day or more at the Festival. Meet volunteers at the beginning of their shift to review the membership ambassador training and ensure that everyone is aware of the goals for the day and motivating other volunteers to reach those goals. Meeting the volunteers at the end of their shift to debrief.
Qualifications: Must have experience volunteering at TVA outreach events, and have completed some form of TVA training. Must be outgoing, have excellent verbal communication skills, friendly disposition and be knowledgeable about vegetarianism and TVA. Must be vegetarian.
Time Commitment Required: Booth captains are expected to commit to being on site at the Food Festival for at least one full day. During that day, they will be expected to spend 30 minutes once every three hours at the TVA booth, when they will meet with the other volunteers, go over the goals and answer any questions volunteers have.
TVA EXPERT (Floater; Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: This is an “on-call” position for experienced TVA volunteers who can fill in for a variety of volunteer positions in the case of no-shows or volunteer shortages. Positions may include tabling, cashiers, program distributors, volunteer check-in and veggie challenge crew.
Qualifications: Must be vegetarian. Must have experience volunteering with TVA, and must complete TVA’s Key Messages Online Training if not yet completed. Should be flexible, outgoing and have great customer service skills.
VEGGIE CHALLENGE AMBASSADOR (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Explaining the Veggie Challenge to the public at the Food Festival and encouraging people to participate. Provide information on the benefits of vegetarianism, and answer questions about TVA and a vegetarian diet.
Qualifications: Must be vegetarian. Must have excellent verbal communications skills and a strong understanding of vegetarian issues. Volunteer must complete the veggie challenge at http://www.veggiechallenge.com before the festival.
VEGGIE CHALLENGE BOOTH CAPTAIN (Must be Vegetarian)
Duties: Taking a leadership role at the Veggie Challenge table for a full day or more at the Festival. Manage and mentor other volunteers, offering tips for engaging people and answering questions about technical things such as how to process a membership or sign people up. Ensuring that everyone is aware of the goals for the day and motivating other volunteers to reach those goals.

VEGGIE COSTUME AMBASSADOR
Duties: Wearing one of TVA’s fruit/veggie costumes to promote the Food Festival. Costume Wearers will be assigned in pairs (1 costume wearer and 1 assistant) to roam the site at the Food Festival and apply temporary tattoos to interested patrons or distribute programs and vegetarian directories. Please note in your application if there is someone you would like to be paired with.
Qualifications: Must be friendly, outgoing, and willing to wear a costume. Must be willing to have your picture taken by Food Festival visitors.
VEGGIE COSTUME ASSISTANT
Duties: Roam the site at the Food Festival and apply temporary tattoos to interested patrons or distribute programs and vegetarian directories. Please note if there is someone you would like to be paired with in your application.
Qualifications: Must be friendly, outgoing, and willing to wear a costume. Must be willing to have your picture taken by Food Festival visitors.
Event Services
EXHIBITOR ASSISTANT
Duties: hand out parking passes to exhibitors. Respond quickly to inquiries. Inspect booths to make sure they are in compliance with Food Festival Exhibitor Policies.
Qualifications: good verbal communication skills, exceptional time management skills and professional demeanour.
PROGRAM DISTRIBUTOR (Family Friendly Position)
Duties: Distributing free Food Festival programs to visitors entering the Food Festival. Program Distributors will typically be assigned in pairs to stand at specific entrance areas at the Food Festival. Some Programs Distributors will also be asked to go off site and hand out programs in the neighbourhood at the ferry docks.
Qualifications: Must be friendly and outgoing. Parents and children may volunteer together.
VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN ASSISTANT
Duties: Assisting TVA staff with checking in and checking out TVA volunteers at the Food Festival.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and help volunteers in a friendly manner.Excellent customer service skills and a friendly, outgoing demeanour required. All volunteer checkin assistants must be available to attend in person training.
WORKSHOP AND LECTURE ASSISTANT
Duties: Distributing survey forms to visitors as they enter the lecture/workshop venue or stage area at the Food Festival. Collecting completed survey forms as visitors leave. Recording attendance to all lectures and workshops and reporting this information back to TVA staff.
Qualifications: Must be able to follow instructions and be friendly and approachable.
