Kathy Stevens – Why Sanctuaries Matter: A Critique of Effective Altruism and a Plea for a Big Tent
Friday September 7, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm | Miss Lou's Room | Speakers
Effective Altruism argues that the value of sanctuaries as change agents is limited, and suggests that those who want their dollars to do the greatest good look elsewhere—to a few non-profits it believes provide donors with the greatest return for their dollars. Using both research and 17 years of running an “impact- driven” sanctuary, Stevens challenges what she believes to be flawed model, and in particular, an uninformed critique of sanctuaries. Drawing on the history of social change movements, along with research indicating that 85% of vegans lapse within the first year, Stevens advocates for inclusion and collaboration, proposing that in the work to create a vegan world, a rich diversity of influencers and approaches is imperative.
